Great American Bake Sale Helps to Cook Up an End to Childhood Hunger
We rarely associate poverty and hunger with America’s children but currently, the parents of more than 30 million children often wonder where their family’s next meal will come from. They rely on food stamps to help feed their children. With the unemployment rate at 8% and continuing to rise, it is more than likely that hundreds of thousands more children will need help by the end of the year. Times are tough for most of us and that makes it difficult to donate money. But, most of us are willing to make the most of our resources when we can.
So what’s the answer? How can we help?
Hold a bake sale! The Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale is an easy way to help end childhood hunger while providing sweets and treats for your community. Nearly $5 million dollars has been raised with Great American Bake Sales by more than 1.3 million participants since it started in 2003. Nearly 100% of the bake sale proceeds from local event are granted back to community organizations that support after-school and summer meal programs within that area.
The Food Network, Domino Sugar, and Family Circle are just a few of the culinary and bakery partners of Share Our Strength’s. Food Network celebrities Sandra Lee and Duff Goldman have provided support with recipes you can find on the participant resource page of the Great American Bake Sale section of the www.strength.org website. The resource page contains helpful tips to hold a successful bake sale, ideas for promoting your event, and tools you can use to add a bit of frosting to your baked goods.
The Great American Bake Sale is one of 5 programs which are part of a 10-point strategic plan by Share Our Strength to end childhood hunger in America. Share Our Strength is a national organization that brings together community groups, activist, and food programs to provide at-risk children with nutritious meals. In addition of the Great American Bake Sale, Share Our Strength works in conjunction with the culinary industry to offer programs like Taste of the Nation, Great American Dine Out, A Tasteful Pursuit, and Operation Frontline; all geared towards making sure that no kid in America grows up hungry.
So if you are looking for a way to make a difference in your community, ask family and friends to join in, gather up your ingredients, and heat things up with a Great American Bake Sale in your town. Help end childhood hunger.
